Zelenskyy welcomes G7 call for ceasefire, border integrity
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the joint statement by G7 foreign ministers in Niagara, Canada, noting that their call for an immediate ceasefire, using the current contact line as a negotiation baseline, and upholding border inviolability demonstrates a united and principled approach to ending the conflict.
In a statement on Thursday, Zelenskyy welcomed the G7’s commitment to increase costs for Russia and those supporting its war efforts, as well as the group’s condemnation of military assistance from North Korea and alleged support from Iran, and the suspected transfer of dual-use components from China.
“I appreciate the willingness to support Ukraine’s energy system amid Russia’s intensified attacks, as well as to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine,” he said, expressing gratitude to the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU for what he described as a principled stance.
He emphasized that coordinated international pressure must continue “after each Russian strike and brutality.”
The G7 statement, released following a two-day meeting, reaffirmed long-term support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, called for an urgent ceasefire, and proposed using the current contact line as the foundation for future negotiations. It also highlighted concerns over recent Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and supported measures to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security.
Russia, however, has rejected Western proposals to freeze the existing line of contact, insisting on a permanent resolution to the conflict.
