US House of Representatives passes bill to end government shutdown
(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday aimed at ending the country’s longest-ever government shutdown, now in its 43rd day, according to reports.
Lawmakers voted 222-209 on the Senate-amended version of H.R. 5371, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026. The bill will now be sent to President Donald Trump for signature.
Earlier, the Senate voted 60-40 to move forward with a House-approved funding measure, which will be amended to extend federal funding through January 30 and include three full-year appropriations bills.
The shutdown began on October 1 following a failure to reach an agreement on federal spending priorities. Since then, thousands of federal employees have been furloughed or working without pay, while numerous government services have been reduced or suspended.
