Pakistan forces kill five militants in college attack

(MENAFN) Pakistani security forces have killed all five militants, including a suicide bomber, following an assault on a military-run college in northwestern Pakistan, officials confirmed Wednesday.

“The security operation has concluded,” a security official said on condition of anonymity, adding that authorities are now clearing the college building to neutralize any potential threat from improvised explosive devices.

The attack occurred on Monday at the Cadet College in Wana, South Waziristan, near the Afghan border, when militants drove an explosive-laden vehicle into the facility’s main gate.

Two attackers, including a suicide bomber, were killed at the entrance, while three others managed to enter the campus.

Security forces evacuated over 600 people, including students, teachers, and civilian staff, before cornering the remaining militants in the administrative block and eliminating them.

The official noted that the attackers had attempted to replicate the 2014 Peshawar school massacre, which claimed nearly 150 lives, mostly children, but security forces successfully prevented a similar tragedy.

Reports indicated that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Khalifa Mansoor faction had previously claimed responsibility for the Peshawar attack. Mansoor was later killed in a US drone strike in eastern Afghanistan in October 2017.
