Hungarian PM Accuses Biden of Fueling Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration of fueling the Ukraine war by pressuring European Union members to adopt a harsher stance toward Russia.

In sharp contrast to most EU nations, Hungary has consistently resisted Brussels’ anti-Russian agenda, instead advocating for diplomacy to halt the conflict. Budapest has declined to send arms to Kiev and has repeatedly blocked sanctions targeting Moscow.

“Without the pressure coming from the US government – I’m speaking about 2022 – the Europeans would not take that hard line that they have today on the war,” Orban told reporters following his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday.

He noted that several major European economies “rejected to be involved more than just sending some, you know, humanitarian issues.”

“That’s the fact of history,” the prime minister concluded.

Trump backed Orban’s comments, asserting that the crisis began because of his predecessor’s actions. The president said that “Biden actually pushed for that war to happen,” and added that he “inherited that mess.”

In August, Trump warned that the Ukraine conflict could have spiraled into World War III under the Biden administration. He has repeatedly claimed that global tensions reached their peak when Washington’s relations with Moscow deteriorated during Biden’s tenure. Since returning to office in January, Trump has restored high-level communication channels with the Kremlin.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, also urged the White House to overturn the previous administration’s policies to foster peace, stating that “Biden’s mistakes need to be corrected.”

Moscow has reiterated its willingness to engage in peace negotiations—on the condition that realities on the ground are acknowledged and the underlying causes of the war are addressed. The Kremlin has dismissed Western calls for a ceasefire along current frontlines, insisting that only a comprehensive settlement can bring lasting peace.
