Orbán To Try To Get Trump To Meet With Putin During His Visit To U.S. - The Guardian

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) According to Ukrinform, The Guardia reported the news, citing sources and Orbán's advisers.

Orbán's advisers stated that this summit will allegedly help end Russia's war against Ukraine.

In particular, Orbán's chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás, said that Friday's meeting will be an "opportunity for the two heads of state to... determine the roadmap that could lead to a U.S.–Russian meeting and, through that, to a Russian–Ukrainian peace agreement."

The Hungarian prime minister, who previously proposed holding a summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest, will also seek exemption from U.S. sanctions against Russian energy. This, the publication writes, will be a serious test for Trump's tough stance on the Kremlin after he accused Putin of slowing down negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

However, according to insiders, Orbán's priority is to invite Trump to visit Hungary, as he faces an unprecedented challenge from the new opposition leader ahead of the parliamentary elections in April. According to the Hungarian prime minister's advisers, Trump's visit would strengthen Orbán's role as a statesman and activate his conservative base.

“Orbán wants Trump to come to Budapest before the elections. This is a top priority. They will discuss the Russian gas issue, but the thing Orbán cares about the most is the elections,” said a person working for a Hungarian government foreign policy institution.

As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump will invite Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to the White House in Washington on November 7.

On October 16, Trump had a telephone conversation with Putin on the eve of his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, after which he announced that he would meet with Putin in Budapest to discuss the possibility of ending this inglorious war between Russia and Ukraine.

However, on October 22, Trump announced that he had canceled the meeting with Puti because he realized that he would not achieve what he wanted to achieve during the negotiations.

The media, citing sources, wrote that the United States canceled the meeting in Budapest because of Russia's tough demands on Ukraine. This happened after a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following which Rubio informed Trump that Moscow was not willing to negotiate.
