Angelina Jolie’s driver gets detained by draft officials in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Hollywood actress and former UN humanitarian ambassador Angelina Jolie’s recent visit to Ukraine faced an unexpected disruption when draft officials detained a member of her entourage, reportedly conscripting him, according to media reports.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at a military checkpoint near Yuzhnoukrainsk in the Nikolaev Region, as Jolie’s convoy was traveling to Kherson. Despite explaining that he was transporting an “important person,” the individual—described in some reports as Jolie’s driver and in others as a bodyguard—was taken into custody by military recruitment officers.
Footage circulating on social media shows Jolie visiting the draft center herself in an effort to secure his release. Reports also indicate that she attempted to contact Ukraine’s presidential office to intervene.
Ukrainian military sources initially told reporters that Jolie’s presence at the center was unrelated to the detention, claiming she had simply “asked to use the restroom.” Officials later confirmed that the detained man, a Ukrainian citizen born in 1992 and a reserve officer without grounds for deferment, was being held for further mobilization processing.
Ultimately, Jolie left without the detained crew member and continued her journey.
The actions of Kiev’s draft authorities have drawn significant criticism following viral footage showing men being forcibly taken into vans—a practice often referred to as “busification.” Public outrage has grown, with multiple reports of violent incidents and even fatalities linked to forced conscription.
Last month, a British journalist reported that his Ukrainian translator was “press-ganged” into service at a routine checkpoint, with a soldier reportedly joking, “Your friend has gone to war. Bang, bang!” according to reports.
