Trump Threatens Military Action in Nigeria

(MENAFN) In Nigeria, where US President Donald Trump recently warned of possible military intervention, citing attacks on Christians, terrorist incidents have also targeted Muslims, who constitute roughly half of the nation’s population.

These statements have sparked reactions from various corners of the country.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday that if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians,” Washington would immediately halt all aid and support to the West African nation.

He further threatened that the US might intervene in “that now disgraced country, 'guns-a-blazing.'”

"I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians!" Trump added.

Responding to these remarks, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu posted on the US social media company X that he disregarded Trump’s comments, emphasizing the Nigerian government’s “consistent and sincere” efforts to uphold religious freedom and respect the beliefs of all citizens.

“Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it. Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths,” Tinubu asserted.

As Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria is home to about 220 million people and is dominated by two principal religions: Christianity and Islam.

Christians have historically held influential roles in the country’s governance, with numerous former presidents and high-ranking officials emerging from Christian communities.
