German Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Syrian Suspected Of Planning Jihadist Attack In Berlin
German officials announced on Sunday the arrest of a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin, suspected of preparing a serious violent act motivated by jihadist ideology.
The suspect was apprehended on Saturday in the Neukölln district and appeared before a judge the following day, with authorities issuing a pre-trial detention order against him.
In a joint statement, Berlin's police and prosecutor's office said the man is suspected of“preparing a serious act of violence against the state” and“spreading propaganda connected to illegal terrorist organisations”.
According to German media reports, special police units searched three residences linked to the suspect and found items that could be used in bomb-making and explosives manufacturing.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the arrest underscores the ongoing high level of terrorist threat in Germany and praised authorities for identifying the plot in time.
Counter-terrorism experts say the case highlights both the evolving nature of jihadist threats in Germany and the continuing challenge of monitoring radicalised individuals living under asylum status.
German media comment that the arrest may fuel further debate over immigration and radicalisation policies, as authorities balance security concerns with civil liberties.
