China calls on US to stand by moratorium on nuclear testing
(MENAFN) China on Monday urged the United States to maintain its moratorium on nuclear weapons testing, following President Donald Trump’s directive for the Pentagon to prepare for renewed tests.
“We hope the United States will uphold the moratorium on nuclear testing and uphold the global strategic balance and may take concrete action to uphold international disarmament and non-proliferation regime,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said during a press briefing in Beijing.
Mao reiterated that China “always embarks on journey of peaceful development,” stressing that the country adheres to a no-first-use policy and maintains its nuclear arsenal strictly for defense purposes.
She added that Beijing is ready to cooperate with other nations to safeguard the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and strengthen the global non-proliferation and disarmament framework.
Trump had claimed that Russia and China were conducting nuclear tests, asserting, “Russia is testing, and China is testing, but they don't talk about it." His remarks came shortly after he instructed the US military to resume nuclear weapons testing — an act that would mark the first such move in over three decades.
