(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RABAT, Oct 30 (KUNA) -- The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council on Thursday urged an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities in El-Fasher, capital of Sudan's North Darfur State, following its seizure by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement on X, the Council condemned "in the strongest terms" grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law attributed to the RSF, urging its commander to fully comply with humanitarian law and ensure civilian protection.
It warned that perpetrators would be held accountable, calling for the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to deliver life-saving aid to El-Fasher residents.
The Council also tasked the AU Commission with monitoring violations and reporting within three weeks, proposing measures to protect civilians.
The statement further called for an urgent meeting bringing together the AU, United Nations, and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Sudan Quartet to coordinate efforts and establish a mechanism for achieving a lasting ceasefire.
El-Fasher has recently witnessed one of the deadliest episodes since the conflict began, with the World Health Organization reporting Wednesday that over 460 people were killed, including patients and companions, at the Saudi Maternity Hospital after attacks and abductions of medical staff. (end)
