Switzerland Expresses Deep Concern Over Ongoing Violence In El Fasher
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
GENEVA, Oct 28 (KUNA) -- Switzerland expressed on Tuesday its deep concern about the ongoing violence in and around El Fasher city in Sudan, warning that the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the safety of humanitarian workers are at risk.
In a statement, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in (Bern) said that Switzerland, in accordance with Resolution 2736 of the UN Security Council, called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and all parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law and their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration in order to protect the civilian population of Sudan and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry described the crisis in Sudan as "a man-made humanitarian disaster," noting that "the world has not faced such a large number of conflicts since the end of the Second World War".
It warned that the conflict which has been ongoing in Sudan for more than two years, has had catastrophic consequences for the civilian population, with more than half of the population now suffering from hunger and millions are displaced.
Switzerland reaffirmed its commitment within the framework of its international cooperation in peace promotion and within the UN to ending the war and mitigating its humanitarian consequences. (end)
