Heavy floods cause death of ten, missing cases of five in Vietnam

(MENAFN) At least ten people have died and five others remain missing following days of torrential rain and flooding across central Vietnam, according to reports on Wednesday.

Relentless rainfall, triggered by a cold front and tropical convergence zone, has inundated the region since October 23, with some localities recording over 1,000 millimeters of rain. The severe weather prompted the evacuation of around 21,000 residents from more than 7,000 households, while hydropower plants have been forced to discharge water to prevent overflow downstream.

In Da Nang, six people lost their lives, 19 were injured, and four are still unaccounted for. Floodwaters submerged 29 communes in the Vu Gia–Thu Bon River basin, while 10 mountainous areas became isolated due to landslides.

In Hue, one person drowned, and a five-year-old girl went missing as floodwaters swept through the city, leaving 32 out of 40 communes underwater. Meanwhile, Quang Ngai province reported three fatalities and over 120 landslides that blocked highways and stranded vehicles.

Authorities, with support from the Vietnamese military, have been conducting search and rescue operations, though ongoing downpours continue to hamper efforts.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that heavy rainfall is expected to persist through Thursday night. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to oversee response and recovery measures in the affected areas.
