Rubio says India is keen on expanding its oil imports

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Saturday that India has shown interest in diversifying its oil imports, following new US sanctions on Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.

Speaking to reporters, Rubio noted:
“Well, I think India has already expressed an interest in diversifying their oil portfolio and who they buy from. And, so, India only needs so much oil.”

Later, Rubio met Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, discussing bilateral, regional, and global issues.

The comments come after US President Donald Trump claimed India would reduce its Russian oil imports following a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In August, the US imposed a 25% tariff on India over its continued purchases of Russian oil, which Washington argued was fueling the Ukraine conflict.

As of September, 34% of India’s oil imports came from Russia. New Delhi has repeatedly criticized what it calls “double standards” in energy trade, emphasizing that it does not recognize unilateral sanctions and acts as a responsible player in the global energy sector.

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted exemptions given to Western countries, noting:
“I read a report that Germany has reached out to the US for seeking exemption [for a Rosneft subsidiary]. The UK already has an exemption for procuring oil.”

India’s position underscores its effort to balance energy security with global diplomatic pressures.
