Russia, India Strengthen Energy Ties
(MENAFN) Russia and India continue to uphold a robust energy alliance and are negotiating new arrangements to broaden their collaboration, Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev told a news agency on Monday.
Tsivilev highlighted that Russia is prepared to supply India with liquefied natural gas (LNG) from both current and upcoming initiatives, aligning with India’s ambition to increase the share of gas in its energy mix to 15%.
The minister also emphasized that India is a significant buyer of Russian coal, and Moscow intends to raise coal exports to the South Asian country to 40 million tons by 2035.
“India remains one of our key partners,” Tsivilev stated. “In 2024, a significant share of our oil exports went to India, and supplies remain at a high level this year. To enhance the reliability of transportation, we are developing a Russian-Indian intergovernmental agreement to expand cooperation in the supply of oil and petroleum products by sea.”
Recent figures show that Russia exported 26.2 million tons of coal to India in 2023, up from 20 million tons in 2022.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Energy Minister Dmitry Islamov identified China, India, and Africa as the most promising destinations for Russian coal.
The ministry noted that while the potential for thermal coal sales is concentrated in China, demand for coking coal is particularly strong in India.
