EU car market expands in September compared to last year
(MENAFN) Europe’s car market saw a strong rebound in September, with new vehicle registrations across the European Union jumping 10% compared to the same month a year earlier, according to reports. A total of 888,672 cars were registered within the bloc during the month.
Across the wider region — including the EU, the European Free Trade Association, and the United Kingdom — sales climbed 10.7% year-on-year, reaching around 1.23 million vehicles.
Among the largest EU markets, Spain recorded the strongest performance with a 16.4% increase, followed by Germany with 12.8% growth and Italy with 4.2%.
Electric mobility remained the key driver of expansion. Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales jumped 20% year-on-year to 167,586 units, making up 18.9% of all new cars sold in the EU. Spain led the surge with BEV sales soaring 59.7%, while Germany and France posted gains of 31.9% and 11.2%, respectively.
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) continued to strengthen their position in the market, representing 34.7% of all EU registrations in September. HEV sales rose 15.9%, reaching 308,037 units.
Plug-in hybrid models also performed strongly, with sales up 65.4% to 91,148 units.
Meanwhile, conventional fuel-powered cars continued to lose ground. Petrol vehicle registrations declined 7.8%, reducing their market share to 24.9%. Diesel cars saw an even steeper fall, with registrations dropping 14.3% and market share slipping to 8.1%, as most EU countries recorded double-digit decreases.
