Sudan Orders Two UN World Food Programme Officials to Leave Country

(MENAFN) Sudan on Tuesday ordered two top officials from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to leave the country within 72 hours, according to a news agency.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned WFP Country Director Laurent Bukera and informed him that both he and WFP Head of Operations Samantha Chattaraj had been declared personae non gratae, the news agency reported.

The ministry emphasized that Sudan remains committed to working with international organizations "in accordance with internationally recognized rules and laws, including respect for state sovereignty," it said.
No explanation was provided for the expulsions. However, the ministry stated that the move would not disrupt ongoing collaboration with WFP on humanitarian and development initiatives in Sudan, the news agency reported.

The WFP has a long-standing presence in Sudan, delivering food assistance to millions of people affected by conflict and natural disasters across the country.

In a separate development, both the Operational Humanitarian Country Team in Sudan and the Arab League (AL) condemned a surge of violence in El Fasher, located in western Darfur, where dozens of civilians were reportedly killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after claiming control of the city on Sunday.

"Access to El Fasher remains severely restricted, and the capacity to respond is rapidly shrinking, while needs increase," the Operational Humanitarian Country Team said in a statement.

The AL called on all warring factions to "prioritize dialogue" and fully activate regional and global political efforts to "stop the bloodshed" and restore security and peace in Sudan, it added.

Meanwhile, the Sudan Founding Alliance—a coalition that includes the RSF, multiple armed movements, political parties, and civil society groups—denied any civilian violence in El Fasher.

The ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, now in its third year, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, and pushed much of Sudan toward famine.

On Sunday, the RSF claimed to have captured El Fasher after months of clashes with the SAF and allied forces. The SAF vowed on Monday to retake the city.
