Ouattara Clinches Fourth Term as Ivory Coast President

(MENAFN) Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara has been announced as the winner of the nation’s presidential election, securing a fourth term in office, according to provisional figures released Monday.

Ouattara received 89.77% of the ballots, as indicated by results provided by Independent Electoral Commission President Ibrahime Kuibiert-Coulibaly.

The election saw over 8.7 million citizens eligible to vote both inside the country and abroad. The commission reported a voter participation rate of 50.1%.

Four contenders vied for the presidency against Ouattara. Former Commerce Minister Jean-Louis Billon, who congratulated Ouattara on Sunday, captured 3.09% of the votes, while former first lady Simone Gbagbo obtained 2.42%.

The Constitutional Council is anticipated to confirm the official results in the upcoming days.
Ouattara had amended the constitution in 2016 to eliminate presidential term limits.

The 83-year-old leader previously won the 2020 election with 94% of the vote.

The campaign period was marked by heightened political tension after several prominent opposition figures were disqualified from running, leading to demonstrations in the southern regions of the country, which are traditionally opposition strongholds.
