Tokyo Stocks End Tuesday Down

(MENAFN) Tokyo shares closed lower on Tuesday as investors booked profits following the Nikkei 225’s historic close above the 50,000 mark a day earlier, while a firmer yen added pressure on exporter stocks.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 293.14 points, or 0.58 percent, from Monday to end at 50,219.18. The broader Topix index fell 39.18 points, or 1.18 percent, finishing at 3,285.87.

Analysts said the decline came as traders cashed in gains after the benchmark index surged more than 1,200 points on Monday to hit an all-time record.

Export-oriented shares were also weighed down by currency movements, as the U.S. dollar briefly slipped into the upper 151-yen range in Tokyo trading.
