Trump says he would love to serve third term

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, saying he would “love to do it,” but he dismissed ideas of running as vice-president in 2028 to circumvent the constitutional two-term limit.

Speaking to reporters during his Asia trip, Trump described the vice-presidential workaround as “too cute” and “wouldn’t be right,” noting that although the law would allow it, he had no intention of pursuing that route.

When asked about a potential third term, Trump added, “I haven’t really thought about it. But I have the best poll numbers that I’ve ever had.” He also suggested that Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio could be “unstoppable” successors, contrasting them with the Democratic field.

The US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment bars presidents from seeking a third term. Overturning it would require approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate—or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of state legislatures—followed by ratification from 38 states, a process widely regarded as highly unlikely.

Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon has claimed there is a “plan” to secure another term for the 79-year-old president, stating last week that “Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that.”

Trump’s statements follow a series of mixed messages: in March, he said he would “probably not” run again but later indicated he was “not joking” about the possibility.

Meanwhile, several potential Democratic contenders for 2028 have signaled interest, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, who has not ruled out running again.
