KABUL (Pajhwok): The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with support from the World Bank, has constructed 360 modern storage facilities for potatoes and onions across several provinces of Afghanistan.

In a post on X, FAO said the new facilities, each with a capacity of 45 to 50 metric tons, will help prevent the decay of vegetables and reduce post-harvest losses.

“With World Bank support, FAO constructed 360 potato and onion storages (45–50 MT each) and trained farmers on maintenance, ventilation, and record-keeping. In Bamyan, farmers once lost up to 30% of their produce in traditional pits-these new storages now reduce losses and boost income,” the organization stated.

FAO noted that the initiative has significantly cut post-harvest losses and improved the income of local farmers.
