The National Meteorological Institute (NMI) reported that this Sunday, October 26, unstable and humid weather conditions will continue throughout most of the country as a result of the indirect effects of Hurricane Melissa and the strengthening of the intertropical convergence zone. This situation will lead to rain and thunderstorms in several regions.

During the morning, showers were expected on the Osa Peninsula and areas near the southern border, as well as in areas near the Nicoya Peninsula.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon in the Pacific mountains, the Central Valley, the northern region, and the western Caribbean coast.

Melissa became a hurricane in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Effects by region in Costa Rica

In the Central Valley, mostly cloudy skies are expected, with rain and isolated showers in the afternoon. San José will see a low of 18.5°C and a high of 26.9°C. In Heredia, the thermometer will range between 20.7°C and 27.2°C.

The North Pacific will have partly cloudy conditions, with possible coastal rains from dawn and isolated showers in the afternoon and evening. In Nicoya, a low of 22.7 °C and a high of 33.3 °C are expected.

In the Central Pacific, there will be coastal showers in the morning and isolated showers in the afternoon and evening. Quepos will see temperatures between 19.4°C and 27.6°C.

In the South Pacific, continuous rain is expected at various times of the day, with mostly cloudy skies. In San Isidro de El General, the minimum temperature will be 18.5 °C and the maximum 26.2 °C.

For the Northern Caribbean, partly cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Guápiles will see a low of 23.1°C and a high of 30.7°C.

The southern Caribbean will have a similar pattern, with variable cloudiness and isolated showers in the mountains in the afternoon, as well as showers near the coast during the night. Sixaola will report between 24.1 °C and 32.5 °C.

In the northern region, cloud cover is expected to increase in the afternoon, with showers and storms in mountainous areas. Upala will see temperatures between 22.4°C and 34.3°C, one of the highest readings of the day.

The NMI indicated that the combination of Hurricane Melissa and the intertropical convergence zone will continue to generate conditions conducive to heavy rainfall, especially in the Pacific regions and mountainous areas of the country.
