Gavin Newsom Considers Presidential Run in 2028
(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed on Sunday that he would consider running for the White House in 2028, describing President Donald Trump as "a wrecking ball."
In an exclusive interview with Robert Costa for CBS Sunday Morning, Newsom, 58, admitted, "Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise," when asked about his potential candidacy for the presidency.
He added, "I'd just be lying. And I'm not — I can't do that." Newsom's current term as California’s governor ends in January 2027, and due to the state's term limits, he will not be eligible for re-election.
Although Newsom has not made a formal decision, he suggested that an official announcement to run for president would likely be years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said, referencing the timing of his possible candidacy.
Currently, Newsom is focused on his efforts to alter California's congressional districts in a way that could create up to five new Democratic seats.
This initiative comes as a response to a recent move by Texas, which passed a redistricting bill that could add five new Republican seats in the state.
The aim is to maintain the Republican majority in the U.S. Congress in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
At present, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives with 219 seats, as well as 53 seats in the Senate.
