Cambodia, Thailand Seal Extended Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Cambodia and Thailand have entered into an extended ceasefire agreement to conclude a deadly border conflict that flared earlier this year.

The accord was signed on Sunday under the supervision of US President Donald Trump, who had mediated the original truce between the two nations.

The deep-rooted tensions between these Southeast Asian neighbors, stemming from colonial-era territorial disputes, escalated in July when both armies exchanged gunfire for five consecutive days, prompting hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee from the border zone.

A peace conference organized in Malaysia soon after led to an initial ceasefire, marking the first move toward resolving the confrontation.

Trump later remarked that he had leveraged trade negotiations with both governments to encourage a reduction in hostilities.

On Sunday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul formalized the broadened ceasefire during the 47th ASEAN Summit held in Malaysia.

Expanding upon the July truce, the new agreement outlines measures to lessen friction and establish enduring stability along the shared border.

The pact stipulates that Thailand will free 18 detained Cambodian troops, that both countries will pull back heavy armaments, commence landmine clearance, and suppress illicit cross-border operations.

After the signing ceremony, the Thai leader stated that the withdrawal of weapons from the border area would begin “promptly,” along with the liberation of Cambodian prisoners of war, and revealed a new joint trade initiative.

His Cambodian counterpart commended the accord and pledged full compliance, expressing gratitude to Trump for his mediation efforts.

He also mentioned that he had nominated the US president for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
