French Government Withstands Dual No-Confidence Motions

(MENAFN) France's recently reappointed Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu, and his administration overcame two consecutive no-confidence motions on Thursday.

Both attempts to unseat the government failed to reach the 289-vote threshold required for success.

The initial motion, introduced by the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) group, was rejected after receiving 271 votes in support and 18 against.

The second motion, presented by the far-right National Rally (RN), performed even more poorly, securing only 144 votes to challenge the government’s legitimacy.

Olivier Faure, the leading figure of the Socialist Party, stated that the party would not support any effort to dismiss the government "as long as Parliament is respected."

The center-left group had earlier hinted at potentially submitting their own no-confidence proposal.

This decision came following a key concession from Lecornu, who announced the temporary suspension of the highly contentious pension reform plan until after the upcoming presidential election. This move was intended to address a major demand from the opposition on the left.

Originally introduced in 2023 under former Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, the pension reform initiative aimed to incrementally raise the national retirement age from 62 to 64.

The legislation has sparked widespread and sustained industrial action, marking one of the longest periods of labor unrest in recent memory.

Lecornu, who returned to his position last week after a brief resignation during a period of political instability, informed members of parliament that he intends to introduce a legislative proposal this autumn.

This proposal would delay the implementation of the pension changes until January 2028.
