Maldives leader reaffirmed his nation’s solidarity with Palestine
(MENAFN) The president of the Maldives has reiterated his nation’s unwavering support for Palestine, asserting that “true sovereignty is measured not by size or might, but by the ability to uphold conscience in the face of pressure.”
In a written statement, Mohamed Muizzu reflected on Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza since October 2023 and criticized the global community’s lack of effective response. He emphasized that the principles of international law should be enforced consistently for all nations, without exception.
Muizzu, who assumed office in November 2023, imposed a ban in April preventing Israeli citizens from entering the Maldives. He described Israel’s assaults on civilian ships delivering humanitarian aid in international waters as an “insult to international law.”
The Maldives also joined South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice last October — a case that remains ongoing — amid reports that Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
“The Maldives believes the international community must go beyond words of condemnation and ensure that international law is applied impartially. There can be no exceptions,” said Muizzu.
He added, “Israel must be held accountable through sustained political pressure, sanctions, and restrictions that make it clear that such crimes will not be tolerated.”
Reiterating his country’s long-standing position, the president stated: “We have now banned Israeli passport holders from entering Maldives.”
