US, Mexico Discuss Strengthening Border Security, Combating Illegal Migration

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed with his Mexican counterpart Juan Ramon de la Fuente in Washington ways to enhance border security between the two countries and to combat illegal migration.
US Deputy Spokesman for the Department of State Tommy Pigott said in a statement late Wednesday that both sides reviewed the work of the US-Mexico Security Enforcement Group and discussed means to strengthen cooperation and coordination to achieve shared security objectives.
Pigott added, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continue cooperation in dismantling foreign terrorist organizations that threaten both countries through the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons.
They also discussed boosting border security, addressing illegal migration, and enhancing bilateral economic cooperation.
Rubio was quoted as saying during the talks that "Washington considers its partnership with Mexico vital in confronting major challenges."
Earlier this month, the US Department of Homeland Security announced that illegal border crossings from Mexico into the US had fallen to their lowest level in more than half a century, with US Border Patrol recording 237,565 apprehensions during the past fiscal year, the lowest in 55 years. (end)
