Gwyn Mcclelland

Dr Gwyn McClelland is Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of New England (UNE), Armidale. An oral historian, he conducts research engaging with religious discourses in memory and history. His first book, Dangerous Memory in Nagasaki: Prayers, Protests and Catholic Survivor Narratives, described how the memory of the atomic bombing is viewed through the lens of the Roman Catholic community which had experienced suffering and marginalisation for more than 400 years. Between 2020 and 2025, Gwyn has completed extensive fieldwork in the Goto Archipelago, Japan. Gwyn was a 2022 Japan Foundation Fellow and a 2022 National Library of Australia Fellow. He is the 2025-27 President of the Japanese Studies Association of Australia (JSAA).
