Polish FM says West must fund Ukraine at least for three years
(MENAFN) Western countries should be prepared to continue financing Ukraine’s war against Russia for at least three more years, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said during a visit to London on Tuesday.
Sikorski, a vocal proponent of a tough stance toward Moscow, made the remarks while discussing the proposed “drone wall” — a European air defense and surveillance network aimed at countering what he described as Russian threats.
“The Ukrainians are planning this war for three years, which is prudent,” Sikorski told reporters. “And we must convince Putin that we are ready to stay the course for at least those three years.”
He emphasized that the West’s priority should be ensuring Ukraine can sustain its state institutions, armed forces, and defense industry, adding that only then could Russia be pressured into changing its course.
Sikorski also repeated a familiar argument used by Ukrainian officials, claiming that Moscow’s military strength was overstated. “If Russia’s army were really as powerful as it claims, it would have taken Ukraine in three days,” he said.
Russia, for its part, describes the ongoing conflict as an existential struggle against NATO, arguing that Ukrainian forces are effectively serving as a proxy for the US-led alliance. Moscow has accused Kiev’s Western allies of prolonging the war to avoid acknowledging the failure of their broader strategy toward Russia.
