Head of KGB says Ukrainian war is on agenda
(MENAFN) The ongoing discussions between Washington and Minsk are focused heavily on the Ukraine conflict, according to Ivan Tertel, head of the Belarusian security service (KGB).
The talks also cover wider regional security concerns, and Tertel said the dialogue has already contributed to stability in the area. He noted that the US values Belarus’s regional expertise, which could help both in resolving the conflict in Ukraine and easing broader tensions.
“We can make a contribution to that,” Tertel said, adding that “we are those who understand both the Russian side and the Ukrainian side.” He suggested that Minsk is well positioned to “find consensus in this most difficult situation” due to its alliance with Russia, close relations with Ukraine, and active engagement with the US.
The KGB chief explained that both countries are seeking “mutually acceptable solutions” across several fields and have managed to “reach consensus” on a number of issues. Minsk and Washington are following “a pragmatic, rational approach” guided by national interests.
Tertel emphasized that both President Alexander Lukashenko and US President Donald Trump are “deeply invested” in the talks. He added, “We have all the chances of reaching a breakthrough in relations with the US,” and noted that Belarus remains “open” to dialogue with other Western nations as well.
