Swedish Military Keeps Eye on Russian Submarine in Baltic Sea

(MENAFN) The Swedish Armed Forces announced on Wednesday that they are actively monitoring a Russian submarine operating in the Baltic Sea, working closely with allied forces in what they described as “routine operations,” according to Swedish media reports.

The vessel reportedly entered the Baltic Sea on Tuesday through the Great Belt, a national broadcaster confirmed.

In response, fighter jets and naval warships intercepted the submarine in the Kattegat Strait and continue to shadow its movements, the military stated.

Describing the mission as a standard procedure, the armed forces emphasized the operation is conducted “in close collaboration with allies.”

The submarine is believed to be the same craft previously reported as malfunctioning in the English Channel earlier this week. On Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte remarked humorously on the situation, referring to a “limping” Russian submarine in his comments on the event.
