Senate Blockade Prolongs U.S. Government Shutdown
(MENAFN) The United States Senate on Tuesday failed to make progress on a Republican-backed proposal aimed at ending the ongoing government shutdown, which has now entered its 14th day.
In a vote tallying 49 in favor and 45 against, the Senate declined to invoke cloture on a motion to advance a spending bill that had previously passed the House of Representatives. The measure, if approved, would have extended government funding through November 21.
Tensions between the two major political parties remain high, with each side continuing to accuse the other of stalling efforts to reopen the federal government.
Despite support from a majority of Republican senators, the bill did not receive the required 60 votes to proceed. Most Democrats opposed the legislation, along with a few Republican lawmakers.
Among those breaking party lines were Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and independent Senator Angus King of Maine, both part of the Democratic caucus, who joined the majority of Republicans in backing the bill.
Republican Senator Rand Paul voted against the proposal, leaving party leaders in need of at least eight Democrats to support the measure in order for it to advance.
Additionally, Senate Majority Leader John Thune voted “no” with the intention of enabling a motion to reconsider the vote at a later time.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman, who had previously supported similar measures, did not participate in Tuesday's vote.
Though a government shutdown does not automatically lead to an economic downturn, it significantly disrupts various aspects of American life and increases uncertainty regarding the stability of the world's largest economy.
During the shutdown, numerous federal workers have either been furloughed or are working without compensation. Others have been placed on enforced leave, awaiting the passage of a new budget.
Each federal department follows a distinct shutdown plan, determining which roles are considered essential and must remain active during the funding lapse.
