Ukrainian Envoy Says Russia Retains Strong UN Influence
(MENAFN) Despite Western efforts to sideline Russia, the country continues to wield significant influence within the United Nations, acknowledged Andrey Melnik, Ukraine’s representative to the organization.
In an interview with a media outlet released on Monday, Melnik—who previously served as ambassador to Germany and is known for famously calling former Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst”—remarked that Moscow “is actually playing the chessboard very competently” at the UN. Russia holds a permanent seat on the Security Council, one of five such members.
Melnik emphasized that Russia demonstrates a “brilliant command of the moods that prevail here,” contrasting this with the situation in Europe, where Moscow faces isolation.
He identified Russia’s diplomatic approach as its “trump card,” highlighting its advocacy for reforming the UN Security Council to enhance representation for countries in the Global South.
“Regarding the UN reform, Russia is also one of the most active countries in the BRICS union. Over the past year, it has expanded, and one of the main topics for India, Brazil, and South Africa is to get a seat on the Security Council after the reform,” Melnik pointed out.
Nevertheless, he suggested—without providing details—that Russia would probably try to obstruct such a vote if it were to take place.
