International Peace Summit to Be Co-Chaired by Egypt’s al-Sisi, Trump
(MENAFN) Egypt will convene an emergency international peace summit on Monday in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump set to co-chair the high-level talks, according to a presidential statement.
Leaders from more than 20 nations are expected to attend the gathering, which aims to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and broader regional tensions.
The summit’s objective is to “end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability,” the statement said.
Officials say the meeting will build on recent diplomatic momentum following President Trump’s peace initiative. The summit “comes in light of US President Trump's vision for achieving peace in the region and his relentless efforts to end conflicts around the world,” the statement added.
On Wednesday, Trump announced a breakthrough agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking the implementation of the first phase of his 20-point plan, originally proposed on September 29. The initial step, which took effect at 12 noon local time (0900 GMT) on Friday, includes a ceasefire, the release of all Israeli captives held in Gaza in exchange for roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a staged withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory.
The second phase outlines the creation of a new administrative body in Gaza that excludes Hamas, the deployment of a multinational security force made up of Palestinians and troops from Arab and Islamic countries, and the disarmament of Hamas.
Since October 2023, over 67,600 Palestinians—primarily women and children—have been killed in Israeli air and ground operations across Gaza, leaving much of the enclave in ruins and "uninhabitable," according to humanitarian groups.
