Von der Leyen Urges Stronger European Defense

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as "a predator" who "can only be kept in check by a strong deterrence."

She emphasized the critical need for Europe to reinforce its military stance in light of ongoing threats.

In a recorded address to the 5th European Defense and Security Conference, von der Leyen highlighted the war in Ukraine—now entering its fourth year—as a stark reminder of the pressing necessity for Europe to elevate its defense preparedness and expand its military-industrial capabilities.

"The defense of Europe is our responsibility. And we can feel the sense of urgency all across Europe," she stated.

Von der Leyen noted that the European Commission had unveiled its Readiness 2030 strategy seven months earlier, a plan intended to enhance the European Union's defense strength and industrial foundation.

Sharing her observations from recent visits to member states bordering Russia, von der Leyen recounted how she had seen "Russia and others ramping up pressure on Europe."

She pointed to incidents including assaults on border personnel and alleged intrusions into EU airspace by Russian drones as evidence of growing hostilities.

Von der Leyen also revealed that 19 EU nations have applied for financial support through the bloc’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program.

This initiative is designed to promote joint arms procurement and fortify overall security, with loan applications reaching a total of €150 billion (approximately $175 billion).

Additionally, she noted that 16 EU countries have requested more flexible budget rules in order to boost defense investments.

This could lead to an increase in military expenditures totaling up to €800 billion by the year 2030.
