5G Technology Drives Major Advancements in Global Military Defense
(MENAFN) The rapid adoption of 5G technology is driving significant improvements in military defense systems globally, enabling faster data transmission, lower latency, and expanded bandwidth capabilities.
A major beneficiary of 5G’s advanced features is unmanned systems, including drones (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). The low latency of 5G allows operators to receive high-definition video feeds and surveillance images in real time, enhancing operational effectiveness.
For example, China's People’s Liberation Army has set its sights on creating the world's largest unmanned military unit, consisting of tens of thousands of UAVs, robotic dogs, and autonomous platforms. According to a South China Morning Post report, 5G will serve as the core technology powering this expansive network.
Additionally, military communications stand to benefit from 5G’s ability to facilitate faster data sharing between units, ensuring high-speed connections for mobile headquarters, as well as linking radar and sensor networks.
In the United States, the Department of Defense made a strategic investment of $600 million in 2020 to conduct 5G trials across multiple military bases, aiming to integrate the technology into its communication systems. Furthermore, the U.S. has dedicated $2 billion towards advancing military-focused 5G research.
On the international stage, NATO initiated its Multinational 5G Initiative last year, bringing together Turkey, Italy, and Spain as founding members. The project focuses on joint research to incorporate 5G into military infrastructure, ensuring secure and interoperable systems for member nations.
