Afghanistan Internet Blackout Sparks Fears Among Diaspora Communities
Afghanistan has plunged into a nationwide internet shutdown, cutting off more than 43 million people from online access and leaving families and communities in distress.
CNN reported that the blackout has disrupted media operations and online learning, particularly for girls who had relied on digital classrooms after Taliban school bans.
Civil society activists warned the shutdown could wipe out one of the last remaining avenues for Afghan girls' education, already restricted under Taliban policies.
Severe disruptions caused by Afghanistan's nationwide internet blackout have grounded flights at Kabul Airport, stranding passengers and leaving airlines struggling to manage delays and uncertainty.
Beyond aviation, business operations, education services, media activities, and trade in Afghanistan have been heavily hit, raising deep concerns over economic stability and social connectivity.
Sabina Chaudhry of Women for Afghan Women organization told CNN the internet blackout has silenced millions, cutting their vital lifeline to communicate, connect, and engage with the world.
The move has raised concerns of further isolation, shrinking freedom of information, and increased control over Afghanistan society by the Taliban.
Rights groups say prolonged disruption could silence dissent and dismantle fragile educational and social progress made over two decades.
International observers have urged restoration of internet access, stressing that connectivity is essential for Afghanistan's education, communication, and integration with the global community.
