Albanese Reaffirms Australia’s Stance on Recognizing Palestine

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese doubled down on his government's stance recognizing Palestinian statehood, emphasizing global calls for peace in the Middle East, according to a report by media on Monday.

In his remarks, Albanese responded to condemnation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who criticized Australia's decision at the UN General Assembly last week.

"The world has made our position clear overwhelmingly. People want to see peace and a ceasefire in the Middle East. They want to see hostages released, they want to see aid go to the people of Gaza," Albanese said during a visit to the UK, where he had met with King Charles.

Australia’s official recognition of Palestine, Albanese noted, aligns with similar moves by Canada and the UK, framing the decision as part of a broader, "coordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution."

The statement comes amid ongoing violence in Gaza, where over 66,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children, have lost their lives since Israel’s military operations intensified on October 7, 2023.
