Trump Alleges India, China are “Funding” Ukraine War
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump accused India and China of “funding” the Ukraine conflict by continuing to buy Russian energy, remarks he made during a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump has consistently promoted the idea of imposing secondary sanctions on nations maintaining economic ties with Russia as a method to heighten financial pressure.
Both Beijing and New Delhi have dismissed the US position, calling it unacceptable and refusing to bow to such pressure.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Trump declared on Tuesday.
The US leader also criticized NATO allies that keep importing Russian oil and gas, implying that they are effectively “funding the war against themselves” by purchasing energy from Russia while simultaneously “fighting Russia.”
Earlier this month, Trump urged Brussels to implement tariffs of up to 100% on Indian and Chinese goods.
This proposal met resistance from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized that the bloc would “make its own decisions.”
In late August, Washington imposed a 25% punitive tariff on India, bringing total import duties to 50% on most products, citing New Delhi’s refusal to curb Russian oil purchases.
No new tariffs have yet been applied to Beijing, following a tariff dispute earlier this year that concluded with a temporary truce.
