South Korean Leader Pledges to Pursue Peace with North Korea

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung pledged Tuesday to pursue a steady course toward easing military tensions with North Korea and rebuilding mutual trust, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking during the general debate at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Lee declared that South Korea respects the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s political system and will not seek unification by force or provocation.

"Based on these three principles, we intend to end the vicious cycle of unnecessary inter-Korean military tension and hostile acts," Lee stated, reaffirming Seoul’s position of non-aggression and cooperation.

He laid out a vision for renewed dialogue focused on "exchange," "normalization," and "denuclearization," arguing that both Koreas must move beyond decades of enmity to a phase of peaceful coexistence and joint development.

While noting the complexity of denuclearization efforts, Lee said a step-by-step approach is vital, starting with a freeze on North Korea’s weapons advancements.

"Denuclearization cannot be achieved in the short term," he acknowledged. "It is crucial for both the ROK and the DPRK, as well as the international community, to work together to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula."

Lee’s speech marks a renewed diplomatic push as tensions have risen sharply in recent months due to increased weapons testing by Pyongyang and stalled talks between the two Koreas.
