U.S. Lawmakers Arrive in China for First Visit Since 2019
(MENAFN) A bipartisan group of US lawmakers arrived in China on Sunday for their first delegation visit since 2019, underscoring efforts to manage complex US-China relations amid ongoing tensions.
On Sunday, US Ambassador to China David Perdue posted on X, the US social media platform, expressing his welcome for the delegation headed by Democratic Representative Adam Smith, stating that the group “plays a vital role in managing the US-China relationship.”
Adam Smith, a Democrat from Washington state and former chair of the House Armed Services Committee, currently serves as the committee’s leading Democrat. The delegation also includes Representatives Michael Baumgartner, Ro Khanna, and Chrissy Houlahan.
This visit follows a phone call on Friday between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where the two leaders discussed TikTok’s future in the US.
During the call, Xi emphasized that “The US side needs to provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors,” signaling willingness to negotiate terms.
Afterwards, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, “I had a great call with President Xi, and as you know, he approved the TikTok deal. We have to get it signed. I guess it could be a formality.”
Under US law, TikTok must be owned by a US entity or face a ban in the country, though Trump has delayed enforcement multiple times since taking office in January.
Alongside TikTok, the lawmakers’ agenda is expected to cover trade tariffs, cybersecurity, investigations into COVID-19 origins, and policies regarding Hong Kong and Taiwan.
