Game-Changing Cancer Care Coming To Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's HMC

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Health Department has initiated practical steps to establish CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery and PET/CT scan facilities for the first time at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), Peshawar, aimed at revolutionising cancer treatment in the province. Proposals have already been invited from interested companies for the project.

According to Health Advisor Ehtesham Ali, this facility will mark a new era in cancer treatment in the province and fill a longstanding gap. He added that once established, cancer patients in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would no longer need to travel to Karachi or other major cities for advanced treatment. With more than 11,000 new cancer cases reported annually in the province, this project is both timely and lifesaving.

The CyberKnife system will provide non-surgical, highly precise treatment for complex and inoperable tumours, while PET/CT scanning will enable timely diagnosis, accurate staging, and effective treatment planning.

Officials said these advanced facilities will improve treatment outcomes, reduce mortality rates, and significantly enhance the quality of life for patients. The centre will also serve as a hub for medical research, training, and capacity building, positioning Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a leader in advanced oncology within Pakistan.

Ehtesham Ali described the initiative as a historic development that will lessen the financial and psychological burden on patients and their families, while further strengthening the province's healthcare system.
