Estonia To Keep Narva Bridge Closed For Vehicles Until Russia's War Against Ukraine Ends

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) This was reported by ERR , according to Ukrinform.

Vehicular traffic across the bridge connecting Narva and Ivangorod was suspended in February 2024 due to reconstruction, which Russia plans to complete in 2026. At the same time, the Head of Russia's Federal Customs Service, Valery Pikalov, suggested the works could be finished as early as 2025.

However, PPA Border Guard Chief Veiko Kommusaar stressed that technical deadlines are not the most important factor.

According to him, until Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine ends, Estonian authorities see no reason to facilitate travel into Russia or reopen the Narva bridge for vehicles.

This marks the first official confirmation that the decision to restore vehicular traffic across the Narva bridge will be based not on infrastructure conditions but on the political and security situation in the region. At present, the eastern border in Narva can only be crossed on foot-a restriction in effect since February 1, 2024.

As reported, nearly 40 kilometers of anti-tank ditches will be dug along Estonia's southeastern border over the next two years as part of strengthening the Baltic Defense Line's border fortifications.
