Afghanistan Media Watchdog Warns Of Escalating Clampdown On Press Freedom

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Afghanistan's media watchdog has warned that worsening restrictions threaten press freedom, silencing journalists and limiting public access to information.

The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) has expressed deep concern over escalating restrictions on journalists and media outlets across the country.

In a statement on Sunday, September 14, AMSO said it was alarmed by reports of death threats against journalists in recent days.

The group noted that in Balkh province, the Taliban-controlled national broadcaster has banned the airing of images, while in Panjshir, all visual media activities have been suspended.

In Kandahar, authorities have also prohibited the production of YouTube content, further limiting independent reporting and access to information.

AMSO described these measures as a serious blow to press freedom and the free flow of information in Afghanistan.

Adding to these concerns, Mohammad Omar Mokhles, a former Taliban police chief in Paktia, revealed that Taliban forces had plotted to kill journalists, though several managed to escape.

The growing restrictions reflect a wider campaign of censorship and intimidation aimed at silencing critical voices. Afghan journalists remain at risk, with little recourse for protection.

As international focus drifts away, media advocates warn that without global pressure, Afghanistan's independent press may face near-total collapse under crrent situation in the country and rule.
