Trump hosts Qatar’s PM for dinner in NY

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump hosted Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, for a dinner in New York on Friday, according to statements from the Gulf nation’s diplomatic mission.

“Great dinner with POTUS. Just ended,” Hamah Al-Muftah wrote on X, the US-based social media platform. The White House acknowledged the dinner but did not provide further details.

The meeting occurred days after Israel’s Tuesday airstrikes in Doha, which targeted Hamas leadership and provoked widespread condemnation across the Middle East and internationally. Trump criticized Israel’s actions, calling them a unilateral move that failed to serve either American or Israeli interests.

The strike resulted in the deaths of five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer as they were reportedly reviewing a new US proposal aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. Since October 2023, Israeli operations in Gaza have killed more than 64,000 people. Qatar has played a central role as a mediator in negotiations to stop the fighting.

Before dining with Trump, Sheikh Mohammed also held talks at the White House with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
