Taliban reports dozens of Pakistani soldiers killed
(MENAFN) Afghanistan’s Taliban government said on Sunday that its forces killed 58 Pakistani soldiers and wounded 30 others during overnight border operations. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, speaking at a press briefing in Kabul, claimed that “certain elements within the Pakistani security establishment want to destabilise Afghanistan.”
Mujahid said the operations occurred at several frontier posts and added, according to a post by an Afghanistani news agency, that the situation at the border was under “complete control, and illegal activities have been largely prevented.”
Islamabad did not immediately confirm the casualty figures. Pakistani state media, however, reported that the country’s military had seized 19 Afghan positions from which attacks were reportedly launched on Saturday night.
A video aired by a broadcaster showed Afghan outposts burning and Taliban fighters allegedly surrendering in Kurram.
Citing security sources, a media outlet said the Pakistani army had completely destroyed the Taliban’s Manojba Camp Battalion Headquarters, Jandusar Post, Turkmenzai Camp, and Kharchar Fort.
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi described the Afghan strikes as “unprovoked” and accused Afghan forces of targeting civilians.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned what he termed a “provocation by Afghanistan in Pakistan’s border areas,” adding, “There will be no compromise on Pakistan’s defence, and every provocation will be met with a strong and effective response.”
