Venezuela proposes economic deals to US

(MENAFN) Venezuela reportedly presented the United States with extensive economic offers, including the possibility for American firms to acquire a significant stake in its oil industry, during confidential discussions that spanned several months, as stated by reports. Sources suggest that Washington ultimately declined the proposals, citing the uncertain political future of President Nicolas Maduro as a major obstacle.

In recent weeks, the US has carried out strikes near Venezuelan waters targeting what it described as “drug boats,” resulting in the deaths of more than two dozen individuals and an increased military presence in the area. US officials have accused Maduro of ties to narcotics networks, a claim he consistently rejects. Meanwhile, Caracas contends that Washington is attempting to engineer regime change, a charge denied by American authorities.

Despite public tensions, unnamed officials from both countries indicated that Venezuela extended a broad diplomatic offer to the US. The plan reportedly involved allowing American companies access to all current and future oil and gold projects, awarding preferential contracts to US businesses, redirecting Venezuela’s oil exports from China to the United States, and reducing energy and mining agreements with Chinese, Iranian, and Russian firms.

The discussions, which unfolded over several months between Maduro’s senior aides and US envoy Richard Grenell, were intended to ease bilateral tensions. Reports indicate that although there was progress on economic issues, the sides could not reach an agreement regarding Maduro’s political standing.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly been a prominent advocate within the Trump administration for removing Maduro from power. According to reports, he expressed skepticism about Grenell’s diplomatic efforts and pushed for a firmer stance toward Caracas.
