UN Chief Hails Israeli Hostages’ Release, Urges Adherence to Ceasefire
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday hailed the liberation of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and called on all involved parties to uphold ceasefire agreements.
In a statement delivered from Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, Guterres said, “I very much welcome the release of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza.”
He conveyed his relief that those freed “have regained their freedom and will be soon reunited with their loved ones after the immense suffering they have endured.”
The UN leader reiterated his previous appeal for the return of the remains of individuals who perished during captivity and urged all sides to “build on this momentum and to honor their commitments under the ceasefire to end the nightmare in Gaza.”
Guterres stressed that the UN “is working to support all efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of civilians.”
His comments come as a ceasefire, brokered to facilitate humanitarian aid and hostage swaps in Gaza, remains in effect.
The initial phase of the truce took hold on Friday under a plan led by US President Donald Trump aimed at concluding the two-year Israeli military campaign in the territory.
Since October 2023, Israeli strikes have killed over 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza, predominantly women and children, leaving the region devastated and largely uninhabitable.
