European Parliament Calls For Sanctions On Israeli Ministers, Partial Trade Suspension

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a non-binding resolution calling for sanctions against two far-right Israeli ministers and the suspension of part of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The resolution was approved with 305 votes in favor, 151 against, and 122 abstentions. It specifically urges the EU to impose sanctions on Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, describing them as "extremists".
The resolution also backs proposals by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to suspend EU bilateral support to Israel and to partially suspend the trade component of the Association Agreement.
While reflecting a growing shift in the EU's institutional stance, the resolution is expected to face obstacles in implementation due to deep divisions among member states.
