Jim Hoare

Honorary Research Associate in the Centre of Korean Studies,
SOAS, University of London
Jim received his PhD in Japanese History from SOAS in 1971. He has been a part of the SOAS community for many years, and is now an honorary research associate in the Centre of Korean Studies. Jim has long been a member of the Anglo-Korean Society, the Korean Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Society for Asian Affairs.
After Britain and North Korea re-established diplomatic relations in 2000, Hoare was appointed British Chargé d'affaires in Pyongyang. His work laid the foundation for the establishment of a full embassy in the North Korean capital. Since retirement, he has become a regular radio and television commentator on Korea. Jim was awarded an OBE in the 2025 New Year Honours for "services to UK interests in the Korean Peninsula".
