Spain Reveals Measures to Put End to Gaza Genocide
(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a series of nine bold measures on Monday designed to halt what he called the “genocide in Gaza,” as violence continues to escalate.
In a televised address, Sánchez condemned Israel's actions, stating, “What Israel is doing is not defending itself, it is exterminating a defenseless population.”
While Spain has already been effectively enforcing a weapons export ban to Israel since 2023, Sánchez confirmed that the government will soon pass legislation making this ban “permanent.” The new restrictions will also target logistical support for Israeli forces, including prohibiting ships carrying fuel from docking at Spanish ports and banning aircraft carrying defense materials from entering Spanish airspace.
Additionally, individuals involved in what Sánchez described as the “genocide, violating human rights and war crimes in Gaza” will be barred from entering Spain.
The measures also include a ban on imports from Israeli settlements deemed illegal in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, and a reduction of consular services to the bare minimum for Spanish nationals residing in these territories. Spain will also expand its military presence in Rafah, with additional troops, and initiate joint projects with the Palestinian Authority to provide essential food and medical aid.
Spain has committed to a €10 million ($11.7 million) increase in contributions to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), along with a €150 million humanitarian aid package for Gaza, set for 2026.
“We know these measures will not be enough to put an end to the war crimes, but we hope they serve to apply pressure to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people,” Sánchez said. “Spain alone cannot stop the war, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.”
